Students generally remain confused (and a bit afraid) when it comes to communication skills for placements. Good communication skills are required to clear the rounds like group discussions and interviews. Before diving into steps to be taken to improve the communication skills, firstly, let's try to understand what is expected from a candidate in terms of communication skills in context of placements.
In simple words, communication skills are seen as the candidate's capability to express himself. How well one responds to questions, discussions, tough situations is what the interviewers generally look for in a candidate. The candidate should be able to express himself clearly. It has nothing to do with super-rich vocabulary (at least in context of placements), usage of idioms, heavy terms etc. It's simply expressing yourself.
If it is that simple, then why the candidates are so afraid from this term. The simple answer is because they are not in a habit of doing such kind of discussions (not even in their peer groups). Also, lack of knowledge in terms of what to speak is also one of the main reasons to this problem. I have seen a lot of candidates failing to answer the most basic question of any interview - Describe yourself (Despite knowing that any interview starts with this question only).
What is the solution to this problem? The simple answer is - Practice. But how to practise is again a big challenge. The old school technique of facing the mirror and speaking works great, provided one knows what to speak. In such scenarios, it usually helps to get engaged in constant discussions with your friends, seniors, faculty etc. The discussions can be regarding your technical goals, technology, your projects, common HR interview questions like - Describe yourself, your hobbies, strengths, weaknesses, life goals etc.
